There is quite a lot going on in Dortmund, which is known as Westphalia's "green metropolis" (for information see here and here). It is part of the Ruhrgebiet, which is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany and the fourth largest in Europe (after Moscow, London, and Paris), inhabited by more than 5 million people, and the cultural capital of Europe 2010. Some random facts about Dortmund (in German).
Dortmund has an airport but it's fairly small. Check the available direct connections here (e.g. London-Luton, Munich, and quite a few airports in southern and eastern Europe).
The nearest larger airport is Dusseldorf, which is the third largest airport in Germany by passenger numbers. It is the most important hub for Air Berlin and a secondary hub for Lufthansa. Check connections here. There is a direct S-Bahn train from Dusseldorf airport to TU Dortmund campus which takes 70 minutes and goes every 20 minutes during the day: schedule (enter from: "Duesseldorf / Airport Station", to: "Dortmund / DO-Universitaet")
Frankfurt airportis the busiest airport by passenger traffic in Germany. There is an hourly connection during the day which takes 2 hours 10 min from Frankfurt airport to Dortmund main station: schedule (enter from: "FRA FrankfurtAirport", to: "Dortmund Hbf").
There are also other airports within the region but they are smaller and possibly more difficult to reach:
Relevant public transport:
To get to TU Dortmund / Fraunhofer ISST by car you might like to try Via Michelin.
Directions to TU Dortmund campus.
Suitable hotels near campus include: Tryp Dortmund, Ibis Dortmund West, and B&B Hotel Dortmund-Messe. Google map with hotels. Information on hotels in the city center can be found here. From the main station you get to the campus in 6 minutes using the S-Bahn (frequency about 20 min during the day, cf. VRR).
Maps: TU Dortmund campus(my research group within the SE chair is on the third floor of the building 17b on the north campus, the Fraunhofer ISST north-west of the bus stop "Fraunhofer Institut" on the north campus). Another more detailed map.
Directions to the chair of SE (in German).

My office is in room 333 on the third floor.
Directions to Fraunhofer ISST.
Google Map link: Fraunhofer ISST. My office is in room 3.009.
Please note that if you expect your hotel costs to be reimbursed via TU Dortmund, the relevant bill / receipt must include the addressee "Fakultaet Informatik, TU Dortmund", as well as your name. This only applies to hotel receipts (and obviously not to travel reimbursed via Fraunhofer ISST).
Also, starting 1 Nov. 2010 the city of Dortmund charges an accommodation tax of 5% on hotel accommodation, except for business travellers. In order not to have to pay this tax, you should mention when reserving the room that you are indeed on business travels. (This applies to visitors to TU Dortmud and Fraunhofer ISST.)
